Compare the2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5VS 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Ford Mustang Mach-E doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Ioniq 5’s standard Downhill Brake Control allows you to creep down safely. The Mustang Mach-E doesn’t offer Downhill Brake Control.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the Mustang Mach-E have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, daytime pedestrian crash prevention, and nighttime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Ioniq 5 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2023, a rating granted to only 50 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Mustang Mach-E was last a “Top Safety Pick Plus” in 2019 but no longer qualifies.

The Ioniq 5 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Mustang Mach-E’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Ioniq 5 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Ford covers the Mustang Mach-E. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Mustang Mach-E ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Ioniq 5’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Mustang Mach-E’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Ioniq 5 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Ford doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Mustang Mach-E.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are better in initial quality than Ford vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai above average in initial quality. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ford is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 40 more problems per 100 vehicles, Ford is ranked 16th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Ford vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 5 places higher in reliability than Ford.

The Ioniq 5 has a standard locking charge port with a power release on its key fob. The Mustang Mach-E doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

The Ioniq 5 stops shorter than the Mustang Mach-E:

For better traction, the Ioniq 5 has larger standard tires than the Mustang Mach-E (235/55R19 vs. 225/60R18). The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Mustang Mach-E (255/45R20 vs. 245/45R20).

The Ioniq 5’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Mustang Mach-E’s standard 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ioniq 5 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Mustang Mach-E.

The Ioniq 5 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Mustang Mach-E doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Ioniq 5 is .9 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Mustang Mach-E.

The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the Mustang Mach-E 4 pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Ioniq 5 AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.4 seconds quicker than the Mustang Mach-E California Route 1 (25.6 seconds vs. 28 seconds).

For greater off-road capability the Ioniq 5 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Mustang Mach-E (6.1 vs. 5.8 inches), allowing the Ioniq 5 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 350 pounds less than the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The Ioniq 5 is 3.1 inches shorter than the Mustang Mach-E, making the Ioniq 5 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Ioniq 5 has 2.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Mustang Mach-E (106.5 vs. 104).

The Ioniq 5 has .9 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom, 1.3 inches more rear legroom, .4 inches more rear hip room and 1.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the Mustang Mach-E.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Ioniq 5’s rear seats recline. The Mustang Mach-E’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Ioniq 5 offers up to a 2300 lbs. towing capacity. The Mustang Mach-E has no towing capacity.

The Ioniq 5 Limited has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Mustang Mach-E doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

When the Ioniq 5 Limited is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Mustang Mach-E’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Ioniq 5 Limited keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Mustang Mach-E doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Ioniq 5 Limited’s Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Mustang Mach-E’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.
