Safety

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Ioniq 6 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The e-tron GT doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Ioniq 6’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The e-tron GT doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Ioniq 6 and the e-tron GT have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The Ioniq 6 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The e-tron GT’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Ioniq 6 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Audi covers the e-tron GT. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the e-tron GT ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Ioniq 6 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Audi only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the e-tron GT.

Tires and Wheels

The Ioniq 6 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The e-tron GT doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ioniq 6’s wheelbase is 1.9 inches longer than on the e-tron GT (116.1 inches vs. 114.2 inches).

Chassis

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 1150 pounds less than the Audi e-tron GT.

The Ioniq 6 is 5.3 inches shorter than the e-tron GT, making the Ioniq 6 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 amounts to more than styling. The Ioniq 6 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .22 Cd. That is lower than the e-tron GT (.24) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Ioniq 6 get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Ioniq 6 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The e-tron GT doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Ioniq 6 has .9 inches more front headroom, 3.5 inches more front legroom, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, 2.5 inches more rear legroom and 3.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the e-tron GT.

Cargo Capacity

The Ioniq 6 has a much larger trunk than the e-tron GT (11.7 vs. 9.2 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Ioniq 6’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The e-tron GT’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Ioniq 6 Limited has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the rear seat, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The e-tron GT doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Ioniq 6 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The e-tron GT doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Ioniq 6 was chosen as Car and Driver’s “EV of the Year” for 2023. The e-tron GT has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.

The Hyundai Ioniq outsold the Audi e-tron by over two to one during 2022.
